Here's the final Cluster. It ended up being a very involved and complex painting, much more than I think I initially expected, which is part of the reason that it took so long to finish. It will be up at the Levine show later this year. Details about prints to come!

This is a very small painting, just 45cm * 34cm. I painted at this scale because it was also acting as a proof of concept, I wanted to make sure I could paint this sort of thing before I expanded it into larger paintings.

Warmer Air will beavailable on Monday 10th October from 7am to 7pm Melbourne, Australia time (approximately).

For Warmer Air we’ve decided to do a timed release. This means you can purchase the print at anytime during the 12 hour window and the number of prints sold in this time willbe the edition size. Once the 12 hoursis up the print is no longer available.

As a guide, the start time is Sunday 9^th October 4pmin New York, Sunday 1pm in San Francisco and Sunday 9pm in London going intothe morning of Monday 10^th October. But please check your time zones.

Please note, the purchase button will be uploaded when theprint is available (our Monday morning and everyone else’s Sundayafternoon/evening), and will appear in the top right corner.

Some details about the print:

Warmer Air is 40cm wide and 61cm long. The image itself is 35cm by 55cm, almost thesame size as the original painting.

It is $120AU and the price includes packing and postage($117US by today’s exchange rate)

We anticipate mailing out may take several weeks, so pleasebe patient.

On a side note, UK framer Misterframeman has put together two frames specifically for this print. There’s a slim dark wood frame or white boxframe available. With off whiteconservation mount board (50mm width) and standard glass.

Warmer Air

This is a small and fast (for me) painting, measuring at 37 * 58 cm. It doesn't have the detail of my large paintings due to it's size, but I think the brushwork at the micro level is perhaps some of the best I've done.

It is also one of the last cosmonaut paintings I'm planning on producing (there's one or two more in the pipeline), although future work should be evolution of those themes, rather than a radical departure.

Given so many people missed out on the last few prints, we'll be making this one available as a timed release, and as a mini print (similar in size to the Cluster Study), with the price as low as possible. It should mean that anyone who is interested in a cosmonaut print will be able to to grab this one.

A Perfect Vacuum Sold Out

We were delighted and overwhelmed by the response to “A Perfect Vacuum” this morning.

The print sold out in a matter of seconds, with paypal struggling to keep up with the orders and our website struggling to load. The constant refreshing clearly took its toll.

Our apologies to all those who missed out on this print and particularly to the 17 I had to refund. Unfortunately paypal was unable to keep ahead of all the orders and managed to accept some despite zero inventory.

Thanks again to everyone for supporting Jeremy. I know we this every time, but we really do appreciate it.

A Perfect Vacuum available soon

A Perfect Vacuum will be available soon as a print (here's the paper to prove it!).

The print will be 60cm wide and a meter long. The image will be 50cm by 88cm, the same size as the original painting.

The print will be $235 AUS. We're sorry for the small increase in price, but the larger size means the print is more expensive to produce.

This time we are also changing a few things.

Rather than send out an email when it's available on the site, this time we will send out an email toward the end of the week to everyone on our contact list, letting you all know exactly when it will be available (the day and time).

We are also increasing the edition to 250 and limiting orders to one print per person.

These changes are in response to feedback from collectors, to try and ensure everyone has a fair shot at getting this new print.

Heres a super high res shot, for anyone interested in the brushwork, this is far bigger than real life when expanded, but seeing the work like this is interesting, it makes me want to paint larger and looser.

"Adrift" delayed until early April

Here are a couple of test prints of "Adrift".

We had planned to have the print available next week, however whilst fine tuning the dark background we noticed that the Hahnemuehle paper wasn't handling all that black too well, producing a silvery mottled effect in the background that was noticable under bright light.

Our print house (the lovely folks at Image Science) did some investigating and introduced us to Museo Portfolio Rag, a gorgeous paper that's smoother and handles the extensive dark areas with ease. And it's 100% cotton, pH-neutral, acid free, and brightener free!

We're just waiting for a shipment of this paper to arrive from the US. It's coming by boat and is expected in Australia on 21^st March. We’ll be aiming to have "Adrift" up on the website at the beginning of April.

Thanks for being so patient. And I promise you, it's definitely worth the wait!

The next exhibition is firming up, both Ashley Wood and I will be having a show in NY at Jonathan Levine in 2012. Should be great - more info to come!

The cluster study is featured in the Sin Issue of the Israeli mag A5, and cheers to Carpark North for using the White Cosmonaut for their new album cover.

I'm still stuck deep in the final part of a painting, hopefully it will be finished soon, and posting will become more regular again!

Beijing approaches! I have 10 large giclee prints and two small paintings ( the Cluster study and the small White Cosmonaut) on show. Except for cluster, all is for sale.

On top of the framed Giclee's, I will also have a very small run (5) of large Heat Death prints which will only be available to people attending the show.

There's going to be a huge collection of great art from Ashley Wood, Phil Hale, Kenny Wong, Rufus Dayglo and Dorophy Tang as well as great 3A work. All in all it should be pretty great! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone who makes it there!

Post Beijing, I will be having a show in late 2011(ish) with Ashley Wood. This one will not be in HK, but in an unannounced location, and should be big!

Prints Update

New Print - Small White Cosmonaut

The new print will be up for sale on Sunday the 23rd of May in an edition of 200. We're printing it at a 1:1 scale - an identical size to the original painting, measuring roughly 33cm a side.

The size has also allowed us to keep the costs down to $95 AUD, which thanks to a low Australian Dollar means that it's only $77 USD on today's exchange rate.

Update: As always, this price includes all p@p costs.

On a related note, we get a lot of queries about whether we will be releasing another edition of 'Heat Death' . The answer is no, we value and appreciate the support of those who buy our prints and feel that it's important to retain the integrity of the editions. We may produce a 'one off' for a special occasion, (for example, there will be one very large print of 'Heat Death' available in Beijing), but other than that, once they're gone they're gone for good.

Here's the finished study for cluster. Added extra boards around the edges to give more negative space for the central element to breathe. And now that I've lived with it for a while I've identified the sections that I want to alter/tweak for the final version. Forward ho!

Study Comparison

A small study for a painting I'm currently working on. I painted multiple studies, trying to iron out where I was going, below is the original. After living with it for a while, I altered the colours and the way the light was falling, as well as changing the cosmonauts legs and top arm to make his posture a little more ambiguous. I also pulled the flying birds out and added the bird on the ground.

I've made a few slight changes since, directly on the final version, such as moving the bird closer to the helmet, to give a sense of connection.

The board will also be present in their upcoming show at the Saatchi & Saatchi gallery, at 70 George street, The Rocks, Sydney. The exhibition is up from 4th - 9th september. 9- 5 weekdays. Cosmonauts Up Close

For Tom, here's high res shots of some of the small cosmonaut paintings. The painting technique varies, but in all of them I was trying to keep my shadows warm and transparent, and the lights opaque. The sketch below, by contrast is painted totally opaque on white, with wet on wet modeling.

They're small paintings, roughly 12" * 12" (the statue sketch is smaller still, the detail is about 3" high), so when you click for the big picture, you're seeing them way bigger than they are in life. The crispness of the images at that level of magnification is a testament to the value of getting a good photographer to shoot your work, in Melbourne I highly recommend The Photography Department.

Lead/Flake white is the obvious bogyman here, but really all paints can be dangerous if ingested. I don't use flake white often, but no matter what you're painting with, proper precautions are not difficult.

The most important thing to remember is to clean your hands before either going for a smoke, eating food or anything else the can involve transmission of paint into your stomach or lungs. If in doubt, or if you are a particularly messy painter, buy some disposable latex gloves.

Mediums.

In my experience, you're more likely to get turps poisoning from mediums than from pure turps sitting in a bowl. I think the reason for this is twofold.

First, the volatile ingredients are turps and siccative, a cobalt drier. The siccative greatly shortens the drying time, meaning the chemical reactions are sped up, and therefor a larger amount of fumes are created in a shorter time period.

Second, generally you are working with the medium directly in front of your face, rather than off to the side with turps. It leaves the fumes with nowhere to go but into your lungs, even with moderate ventilation.

The medium on the left in the above photo is a low toxicity version, replacing turps with an odourless solvent.

These are alkyd mediums. They tend to have a far faster drying rate than oil based mediums, and so really pump out the fumes. I really wouldn't recommend them in an area with inadequate ventilation. They can also irritate the skin when in contact.

Remember that the fumes will increase in proportion to the surface area that the medium is being used over, as well as the paint/medium ratio being used. So if you're planning to glaze a large area, you're going to greatly increase the fumes generated. It's wise to either move the painting to a very well ventilated spot or at the very least, limit your exposure to fumes by shortening your painting time.

It's not a particularly glamorous aspect of painting, but it shouldn't be skipped over, as it can have significant long-term health impacts. These posts are by no means a comprehensive list, just some of the major issues I've dealt with.

Turps.

It's ubiquitous in oil painting, but it's it's actually pretty nasty stuff. Sensitivity to turps varies from person to person, and increase dramatically over time. You should always use ventilation when using it, and try to avoid contact with skin.

I don't use turps in my day to day practice, but rather these substitutes instead.

Odourless solvent is a super low toxicity alternative, but should only be used for cleaning brushes, not for dilution of paints. For that, I use White Spirits.

UPDATE - Whilst the odourless solvent I use is a low toxicity alternative to turps, there are other odourless variants out there from different companies that have the smell removed, but not the toxicity. Make sure you know what you're getting!

Remember that the symptoms of turps poisoning can easily be confused with a bad cold (sore throat, difficulty breathing etc), so if you find yourself coincidentally getting ill after a few days of painting, you could be poisoning yourself. Get better ventilation!

Along with my larger work, I'm starting a series of small painting sketches like this one. They're there to push along my ideas about composition and colour/tone theory during those times when, because of the lengthy painting process of my large paintings, these elements are otherwise static.

Some might evolve into full paintings, but most will probably stay at this level, useful experiments.

They should also make for a lot of blog fodder.

Here's the super fast initial comp for the other big painting I'm working on. I've since changed the composition, the positioning of the cosmonauts here is a little too difficult to connect with, and begins to suggest a specific narrative, something I'm tying to avoid.

I'll post an updated comp pretty soon, but next I'm planning to post a series of small paintings and talk about how they're fitting into my evolving painting methodology.
